Richard P. "Richie" Havens (born January 21, 1941) is an American folk singer and guitarist. He is best known for his intense rhythmic guitar style (in open tuning), soulful covers of pop and folk songs, and his opening performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.The Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a historic event held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre (2.4 km²; 240 ha) dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel (Sullivan County) is 43 miles (69 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, which is in adjoining Ulster County.To many, the festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the "hippie era." Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Although attempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll.The event was captured in a successful 1970 movie, Woodstock, and Joni Mitchell's song "Woodstock", which memorialized the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.All copyright belongs to the respective (and respected) artists.

It was tried again in 1994 and 1999. The last one was a huge disaster.

@tamerswan Woodstock was a magical thing. I think personally if we were to try to do it again it just wouldnt be the same. that "magic" wouldnt be there. sure we might have alot of people at one spot and alot of music but it wouldnt be the same. we have festivals all the time now like lollapalooza. we should be thinking about something new that would have meaning to whats going on NOW. not trying to recreate the long lost magic of woodstock. it would be nice. but at the same time...

@jasonecc It's open E tuning......
TheBluesmaster1955 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
It's an EXCELLENT tune...and he complety "ad-libbed" the song......he was on stage for almost 4 hours because other acts had been delayed by the traffic.......he was out of songs- but they kept telling him "one more"- this is one hell of an example of making it up as they go! Only the last verse is gibbership- but it's still one hell of a tune!
